Archive is large house made out of lace-like stainless steel that floats twenty feet above the ground, tethered to the earth by silver ropes that are weighed down by large boulders. The work plays with the tension between the illusion of levity and reality of gravity. The lattice-like effect is created from a random collection of letters that are cut from the steel form of the house, creating a rhythmic pattern that will be illuminated from within at night. Archive responded to the Centre’s call for a work that was inspired by the notion of the archive; it alludes to collective and social histories that are both ephemeral and transitory, yet, by virtue of the human the desire to collect and organize, are also permanent and cherished.
